The Problem We Were Solving

For a long time, women’s race gear treated storage as an afterthought. If you wanted to carry fuel, the options were usually external. Belts that bounce or pockets placed where they rub, pull, or subtly change how you run. We wanted to design a solution that lived on the body, moved with the body, and never felt like something added on.

Bogota Fabric: Support Meets Stability

The foundation of the Marathon Race Crop is Bogota, a 210gsm compressive interlock fabric composed of 74% polyester and 26% lycra.

Bogota was chosen because it does two things extremely well: it provides consistent, supportive compression, and it never loses its shape. That stability is critical when storage becomes part of the garment. The fabric has to hold weight close to the body without stretching out, sagging, or shifting under movement.

Storage Built Into the Pattern

Storage is the reason this piece exists.

The Marathon Race Crop features:

  • A central racer-back pocket, positioned between the shoulder blades

  • Two side pockets, integrated into the outer layer

Each pocket placement was mapped through wear testing to avoid pressure points, chafing, or bounce over long efforts. The rear pocket keeps weight centred and close to the body, ideal for gels or small essentials. The side pockets provide additional capacity, including a phone, without pulling the garment out of position. The key detail is distribution. By spreading storage across the upper body and pairing it with compression, the load stays balanced and stable, even late in a race.

Construction & Layering

The Marathon Race Crop uses a medium-support shelf bra beneath a seamless outer layer that extends to the mid-torso. This layered approach allows us to separate support from storage — each doing its job without interfering with the other. Seams are minimised and placed away from high-movement zones. The outer layer stays smooth against the skin, while the internal structure manages load and stability. The result is a race crop that feels clean, secure, and confidently capable over long distances.

Why We Created It

We wanted to remove the need for external storage altogether. The Women’s Marathon Race Crop is for runners who want to show up with everything they need, built into a single garment. It’s built for marathon racing, long sessions, and any run where carrying fuel is part of the plan.

FIELD NOTES

Field Notes are our way of pulling back the curtain. They’re written by the designers and athletes who build and break every Black Sheep product. Real testing. Real data. Real stories from the road, trainer, or lab — all to show the work behind the gear you wear every day.
